Unlike floating docks and gangways that move up and down with tidal levels and wave action, piers and walkways are fixed structures that provide waterfront access by extending out into the water. Piers can extend a great distance over water for access to fishing, or over wetlands providing minimal impact for observing nature. One of the longest piers in the world extends a distance of 1 3/4 miles out to sea! Walkways, like piers, can extend for great distances over marshy ground, sand and sand dunes. Most commercially developed beachfront real estate uses raised walkways known as boardwalks.
